Diamonds continue to be the most sought-after gemstone. It is popularly used in making jewelry because of its characteristic hardness and high dispersion of light that exudes incomparable brilliance and beauty. However, in reality there are other shades of this gemstone such as the yellow diamond. The yellow color is due to the impurities that are harbored inside as they were formed. These impurities are actually nitrogen atoms, which replace some of the carbon atoms in the diamond’s structure. The intensity of the color depends on how much nitrogen is present.

There are different grades of yellow when classifying this kind of diamond, ranging from the lowest intensity which is the light yellow to the strongest, the fancy vivid yellow. This fancy vivid grade of yellow or canary diamond has gained popularity these past years as some celebrities began to use it for its known beauty and rarity. It is estimated that fancy colored diamonds make up only 1% of the diamond supply in the world. And the vivid yellow variety constitutes only a minute portion of that. Like the colorless variety, this colored diamond is graded according to the 4 C’s, which are color clarity, cut and carat weight. It can also be used in a variety of jewelries like rings, earrings, pendants and bracelets. As such it can still be aptly called a woman’s best friend.
