The BHN of the metal lead has typically around 5 but when alloyed with 63% tin can increase it to 17. Monitoring the BHN of the lead bullets being made is also important to ascertain its consistency. Expansion is usually connected with consistency so a long range shooter does not want ammunition that is unpredictable enough as to compromise firing accuracy.
